THE CATALOG

The catalog section is pretty much straight forward, nothing new to learn here. The big difference is that the vendor now has the opportunity to display his product line in a new media. Whether or not the vendor takes advantage of this new media is another story. There are on-line catalogs that are chalk full of photos with detailed information on each part.

On the other hand, there are catalogs that consist of endless parts lists with little or no part information and are devoid of photos. In a media where "SEEING" is what it's all about, we'll let you be the judge. The second place where the vendor can drop the ball is navigation. Can you find what you need quickly and easily or does the catalog seem to lead you around in circles and then spit you out back at the home page? If you cannot find what you are looking for without a lot of effort, chances are you will shop elsewhere next time. Once you find what you seek, all you have to do is click on the item or on an order button and then head off to the shopping cart to pay for it.

WHAT IS A SHOPPING CART?

A shopping cart is a software function within the catalog that keeps track of items you request while you look through the catalog. The shopping cart also helps you keep tabs on your totals and allows you to adjust quantities or even drop an item if you change your mind. Most shopping cart systems will also compute the shipping charges and taxes to give you a better understanding of your total charges. At the end of shopping, you will be directed by the shopping cart system to a check out section where your personal information is collected through self-entry. This function handles your order in the same manner as a order-taker does over the phone or a counter person at your local parts house.

But, instead of a a clerk on the phone, you enter in your personal information, such as your name, address, credit card number and so forth. Some systems also allow you pay by check online. The process is faster for you, because the check is not held until it clears. Your check is verified in minutes and your order is on the way in the same time as a credit card order. This service is really catching on, so look for this option if you prefer using cash.[more]
