 Speedometer Calculation Formula

The SAE Standard for Speedometers on American cars is set up so that the speedometer cable will turn 1,000 rpm at 60 mph or 1000 revolutions in 1 mile.

Simply multiply the rear axle gear ratio by the speedometer drive gear, divide that by the tire diameter and multiply this by 20.2 (a constant).

The following formula can be used to determine the correct speedometer driven gear.

Driven Gear = Gear ratio X Speedometer Drive Gear / TD = a

a X 20.2 = Number of Teeth on Speedometer Gear
