View Full Version : lowering a '50 GMC
Hi, I'm looking for the most cost-effective way to lower my Jimmy. The back will be easy by switching the shackles, but how should I go about getting the front down. I'm only looking for a couple inches. Just put the steelies back on so clearance is not a problem. Thanks for your help!

Lowering a stock truck can be a bit tricky. Like you said the rearend is fairly simple. I even saw guys use mono leaf springs form mini vans on the rear with success. Of course some welding was required. The front is a diffrent story. There are a couple places that sells a brand new dropped straight axel. Will drop the front 2 to 4 inches. Cost around $400.00. Too much drop in the front may cause the pitman arm to have sterring problems.

Been gone for a while and am finally able to get back to work on my 51 5 Window.
Have a question about ride height.
Looks like the low points are the botton of the running board supports. I am looking at 5" to 6" as the running ground clearance.
With the rear end I am using - 88 IROC Disk brake dif, I end up with about 3" clearance between the top of the axle and bottom of the frame. Does that sound OK?
Am working out the details of either Coil Over Bilsteins or Convoluted air bag on top of axle.
