I just bought a 1948 ford F1. I was going to go the standard "mustang 2" frontend, but saw that some repo dealers are selling kits for disc with the stock spindles and front end. Any real draw back to this? Can you rebuild the leaf setup to work well? And what about putting power steering on that stock frontend? Thanks

Welcome Zeke. I think I would avoid trying to 'upgrade' the existing leaf spring front end by adding disc brakes and power steering.

If I may, I'd like to assume that the reason you're contemplating the new front end is a non-stock (i.e. much more powerful) driveline and you're looking for drivability and good stopping power. If that's the case, the stock leaf spring front end will make your driving experience a nightmare!

I have spoken to many people who went this route only to rip it all out and add the Mustang II after all costing them more in the long run.

My '52 Chevy also has a leaf spring front end and it is making way for the Mustang II so I won't have any worries down the road. I would recommend you get with your local truck club and talk it over with anyone who has gone that route already and they'll likely echo my thoughts.

If my assumption is wrong and your're looking to restore your truck to original state, then never mind! :D

Let us know what you decide!

While I cannot say for the Ford, I know there are several options for GM trucks like the Volare or the Camaro. Perhaps some of our resident Ford experts can chime in. In the mean time, I'll take a look around and see what I can dig up.

Ok...here'a an article I found on Ford Truck Enthusiast's (http://http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/10/189/article/Front_Suspension_Alternatives_for_1948__1960_Ford_ Trucks_Part_One.html) web site. It discusses reasons for changing as well as options. Good luck and keep us informed with pictures for the bigger words! ;)
