Ive got a 1984 Chevy C10 with a 305 in it and want a 350 or 383. What would be better? If i could find a decently priced motor from somone and just rebuild it or go ahead and take the big step and throw 2300 down on a brand new one. I dont have alota money to spend on this so what would be cheaper and a better decision?

The 383 is a hybrid version of the small block. A basic overview is that the 383 is a stroked small block engine. This configuration requires expensive machine work to do correctly. The basic 350 is the lower cost option here. You can buy GM crate engines starting at $1300 up. The other option is a good used engine. I replaced a 305 on El Camino with a used 350 for around $1500 complete. I found a good wrecking yard motor with 45K on it and it has been a good buy for me. I replaced the pan gaskets, timing chain, oil pump, water pump, and thermostat. Fired it up and it runs great.
