Rick Soares's 1971
GMC
I am the original owner purchased Sept 1971. The
truck has 384,000 on it. Daily driver until 1989. Then used for weekends in the woods. I
had a Six-Pac cab-over made for the short bed trucks. In 1995 the camper went to the junk
yard to make way for our trailer. A 1989 Jimmy or a 1995 Yukon have the trailer towing
duties now.
The 71 engine was rebuilt once back in 1984 a stock 307. The restoration
project started June of this year. I removed all the original moldings & name plates
to smooth it out. Paint is the original Hugger Orange. My chrome spoke wheels were showing
their age so they were powder coated in a silver vein.
The engine has Hooker Headers,
coupled to a pair of 2-stage Flowmasters with a balance tube. A Accel Blueprint
Distributor replaced the worn out original. It breaths through a Edelbrock Performer
Manifold topped with a Edelbrock Performer Series Carburetor and Edelbrock Signature Open
Air 14"" Cleaner.
I replaced the original 3-speed with a Muncie M-21 4-speed a
direct bolt in no change required to drive shaft needed, 3.73 gears bring up the rear. The
interior has had the seats rebuilt & covered, carpets added.
The back window tinting
saves the back of your neck in the California sun. I added power steering when the
original non-power box wore out. The truck came with the disc breaks up front & sway
bar.
The bed was tricked out with Arma- Coating spray in liner. A touch of
pin-striping
hood, tailgate, & at the side marker lights added a nice look. I still have a few more
things to do, but it coming along as planned.
